Pinspired: Building A Wardrobe With Help from Pinterest!

Ever since Pinterest introduced their custom-curated, personalized “Interests” section, I have been even more enamored with the website! The home feed is great and everything–seeing what your friends and favorites pin is always an excellent source of inspiration–but Interests just took things to another level. If you haven’t checked it out yet, the new section organizes custom boards based on things you’ve personally pinned, searched, and liked. For me, this means new boards full of Victoria’s Secret hair, Anna Wintour, healthy dinners, beauty hacks, and leopard print coats, just to name a few topics of interest! If anything could make Pinterest more addictive, this is it. Topics are tailored exactly to each users interests, meaning that you’ll probably be logging some additional hours behind your laptop, enthralled in your favorite “research” topics. Aside from healthy living and VS beauty, another one of my custom Pinterests interests is something called “Build A Wardrobe“. I’m obsessed! The board is chock full of endless outfit ideas, packing tips, essential basics, and wardrobe remixes galore. I love seeing how other ladies stock their closets and determine what’s essential. Here are links from a few of my favorite pins!

  • Build A Wardrobe On A Budget: Fashion Essentials Every Frugal Girl Must Have: This super-informative article from Frugal Beautiful not only provides and essentials lists, but also features shopping tips!
  • Building a Capsule Wardrobe: Capsule wardrobes always intrigue and inspire me–you have to be massively creative to be able to mix and match the same few pieces over and over and over again while still looking stylish and fresh! This piece from UK site Jodi Goldman provides 7 simple steps for doing just this! With just 13 pieces (not including shoes or accessories!), you can create 90+ outfits. Love.
  • Building A Wardrobe Series: Part 1 – Out With The Old: This piece from Real Girl Glam deals specifically on the initial phase of building a wardrobe: closet clean out! This is a totally essential step for anyone looking to start fresh, get organized, or simplify or modify her style and closet.
  • Putting Me Together: Style / Wardrobe Tips: More than a mere article, this entire site focuses on creating what the author calls a “remixable wardrobe”. So. Many. Resources! It’s a must-bookmark. If that’s not endorsement enough, the pinner before me noted, “When I went looking for resources to help me grow-up my wardrobe, this was the most helpful blog! Gentle, low-budget support for building a wardrobe that is versatile, remixable, classic, and fitting.” That’s the dream, girls.

Have you checked out your Interests page on Pinterest? What have you found?! Any tips for growing a wardrobe you’d like to share?

Gotta love a beauty cheat sheet! Image via PInterest.

If you’re a perfume wearer, you probably have a few key places you’re most likely to dab, spritz, spray, or roll-on your favorite fragrance. But did you know that there are actually scientific points that you can apply perfume to make the scent last longer? It’s true, and the photo above highlights each of them! Choose your locations and add your fragrance as desired to intensify the scent’s strength and staying power. My personal fave? Inside elbow, inside wrist, and nape of neck. It lasts all day, you release a waft of fragrance whenever you flip your hair, and you get to smell your own perfume!

Saturday Night Style Inspiration: Casual Luxury With Kerry Washington

Image via Pinterest.

All hail Kerry Washington! Image via Pinterest.

Leave it to Olivia Pope Kerry Washington to class-up our lazy-girl fall basics and make them Saturday-night chic! A glamourous take on the sweatshirt + leggings + boots combo of our co-ed days, Kerry’s use of unexpected textures , fancier footwear, and sultry makeup take this look to the next level. The elements are practically the same: leggings + boots + sweater – but the look? SO much better. The obvious standout, must-buy piece in this outfit are the sequined legging, which, believe it or not, are actually a lot more versatile than you might think. Here, they provide your look with a glamourous foundation with minimal effort. Next on the list? The sweater. How does the sweater in the new formula differ from your go-to? Simply put, it offers more. Look for a piece with some sort of unexpected detail–like fun elbow patches or pannels, uncommon tailoring–think, an especially oversized, verging on cape-like cut–or something fashioned in an ultra-luxe textile–hello, cashmere! Last on your list is a pair of kickass ankle boots, which, aside from being super on-trend this season, break up your look and affords more edge than a pair of equestrian boots, but more comfort than your classic Saturday night stilettos. Now all that’s left is your beauty game: opt for a smokey eye,  a creamy neutral lip, and PILE on the mascara. Result: Irresistible. Want the look? Check out our buyables for pieces to splurge on below.

Cute & Cozy: Staying Warm & Looking Hot (Enough)

Cute & cozy personified. Image via Pinterest.

Cute & cozy personified. Image via Pinterest.

To quote one Hannah Horvathit’s Wednesday night, baby, and I’m alive!

LOL jk, that’s a lie–it’s Wednesday afternoon and I’m holed up in my apartment in a nest of blankets, streaming Netflix, and feeling cozy. Last night marked the first official snowfall in Minnesota. All I can think about is layering up, sipping hot chocolates, perusing faux fur outerwear, wrapping up in chunky knits, and committing full-on carbicide. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Seriously though–winter dressing can be kiiind of a pain. Between the elastic waist pants (or babydoll dresses…) of Thanksgiving to the sequin-encrusted ensembles of New Years Eve, however, there is, thankfully, some wiggle room for looks that are comfortable, warm, and stylish. Peep our list below where we’ve unearthed expert resources for staying warm and looking hot (enough)!

How To Wear A Maxi Dress In Fall

While fall is often considered the best time of the year for fashion, sometimes saying goodbye to summer or otherwise out-of-season pieces can feel rather heartbreaking. While you’ll probably have to stow your bikinis, macrame, and bustier tops this autumn, a new season doesn’t constitute a total closet purge! If you’ve been dreading ditching your summer maxis (perhaps in favor of the jeans+boots+blazer routine we’ve all fallen victim to at one time or another?!) don’t be! Summer’s longline staple is still totally wearable in cooler temperatures…All you need is a little creative styling. Here’s how to wear a maxi dress in the fall.

Option 1: Leather It Up

Key Pieces: Leather Jacket + Ankle Boots

Nothing fall-ifys a maxi like adding a killer leather jacket over top. Not only does this simple addition lend a more badass vibe to even the most feminine of pieces, but it also warms–visually and literally speaking. This particular combo is a favorite amongst celebrities and basically impossible to mess up. Buy a leather vest earlier this season? You’re in luck–they look amazing over a maxi, too. Options, people. Speaking of which, ankle boots (aside from being our go-to in fall footwear!) are a perfect option for pairing with your maxi because they anchor the look and lend seasonal appeal. If you feel like showing off a particularly awesome pair, wear a maxi with a slit or tie up the bottom!

Option 2: Layer Over It

Key Pieces: Sweater + Belt

Though a spaghetti-strapped maxi dress’s days are likely limited in your autumn wardrobe, it’s sister the maxi skirt can be worn well into the winter with a little planning…See where we’re going with this? Every maxi dress can become a maxi skirt. All that’s required is a few key layering pieces. Enter: The fisherman sweater! If you’re rocking a maxi with a fitted bottom, popping on an extra-cozy oversized sweater effortlessly transforms the look into the classic tight bottom/relaxed top combo that’s so universally flattering. Stock up on those chunky knits! Bonus points if your sweater is at all shoulder-slung–an unexpected glimpse of shoulder can be super sexy. Add a belt (large or small!) to define your waist and make your look even more polished, or opt for a cropped sweater for extra emphasis.

Option 3: Accessorize Like Crazy

Key Pieces: Fall Hat + Circle Scarf + Vest

Sometimes, the smallest pieces make the biggest impact. Pile. It. On. On warmer fall days, you can totally get away with a maxi dress–sleeveless or otherwise–paired with a vest, circle scarf, and a wool hat. Will you be as warm as you would be in jeans and a jacket? Obviously not. You will look eons cuter, however. Further proof is available in this photo–even the most summery and translucent maxis can be transformed with the simple addition of belts, bangles, and fringe. Throw a vest over it and you’re golden. Adding these kinds of accessories generally allow you to keep the summery appeal of the maxi intact while still (somewhat) covering up. You’re not changing the look by adding  sleeves, or altering the proportions with the addition of a new top layer. Cute accessories, however, do have the power to make a basic dress look completely different. Go with it! Change things up for fall by adding not only the above elements, but also layering on an arm party, jeweled necklace, or a statement belt.
