Style Crush: Louise Roe

Style Crush: Louise Roe!

Style Crush: Louise Roe!

My newest style crush, Louise Roe, may not prove instantly recognizable by  name alone, but if you’ve watched Style Network, The CW, or MTV in the past five years, there’s a pretty good chance you’re already familiar with the brunette beauty! This UK import has a ton of fashion and entertainment experience under her belt.

Classic beauty, classic Louise. Image via Pinterest.

Abroad, Louise has hosted programs in the UK on BBC and E!, guest judged on Britain’s Next Top Model, and Fashion Police. Stateside, Louise appeared on the second season of MTV’s The City, hosted web segments for Vogue.com, starred in CW series Plain Jane, and replaced Elle Macpherson as the host of Fashion Star (where her impeccable outfits first caught my attention!). Most recently, however, Louise was given a co-host slot on Style Network’s new interactive talk show, Style Pop.

If all of that isn’t enough, Ms. Roe’s other resume credentials include modeling, writing fashion columns for Huffington Post, MSN News, In Style, Glamour, and Cosmo…PLUS, she served as Fashion Editor At-Large of Glamour! So with all of that being said, it should come as no surprise that Louise is not only this week’s Style Crush, but also kinda-sorta-completely my life crush. Forever. For real.  Effortlessly beautiful and fresh-faced with a keen eye for style, Louise is the type of woman that you would almost hate for having it all if she wasn’t so completely likable and down-to-earth. No no. Instead, you simply bask in her amazingness. She’s just one of those girls.

Look Like Louise!

LouiseCasual

Loving this candid snap of Ms. Roe keeping things casual! Print paints, two-toned shoes, shapely sunnies, and a statement clutch?! Effortlessly fabulous. Image via Pinterest.

Use these effortless outfit hacks to add some of Roe’s signature style to your everyday looks!
  • Don’t shy away from prints. From pouring through images of Louise, the #1 thing I noticed about the starlet is that she is almost always rocking a patterned piece. In every ensemble! Though she loves patterns on a large scale (like a jumpsuit or dress), if her apparel is on the simpler side, she doesn’t hesitate to punch up her look with an animal print shoe, patterned scarf, or reptile-skin bag.
  • Be bold! Try out daring trends! Roe rocks jumpsuits, wide leg trousers, sheer skirts, and full-on lace with confidence and ease.Though it’s gotta be difficult to look bad when you’re 5’10” and have amazing genes, embracing Louise’s fashion fearlessness is always a style DO.
  • Enhance your shape with a blazer. Another thing I noticed while looking at snaps of Louise is that she loves a great blazer, jacket, or wrap. The extra not only helps to add depth to her outfits, but it also serves to nip in her waist and define her shape.
  • Keep your nails immaculate. It’s not every day that I actually pay attention to stars’ nails, so you know that Louise’s are constantly on point to deserve a mention! Nails that are dark, shiny, short, and rounded seem to be Roe’s go-to, but those digits look perfect no matter her outfit. Take an extra half hour this weekend to give yourself a mani! This one tip will keep you looking primed and polished even on your most off of off days.

Signature style and a signature pose 😉

Is Louise Roe on your style radar? Have you watched any of her shows? Who are your Style Crushes of the moment?!

The Obsesh: Chunky Gold Chains

07209d16f07d513a9ef87d6f47e5e805I’m sure you’ve seen many bloggers and personalities rocking a chunky gold chain round their necks, as it’s super pops in street style. Rihanna does it, as well as loads of other urban musicians. There are many chains online inspired by the Celine ID tag or the Versace lion head medallion, but I find myself using the solid, simple one most. Maybe some of  you have thought, “Um, that’s kinda gaudy”, but if you’ve been like “Oh damn, I want one”, I have what you’re looking for. They’re referred to online as either chunky link, curb chain, or thick chain necklaces and here are my top 5 online spots to snag a necklace of your own:

  1. GoJane.com ($9.50)
  2. ASOS [Here are some good ones: extra chunky ($42.43), long chain ($17,82), triple pack ($42.43), four pack ($23.76), classic ($25.46)]
  3. Etsy ($14.48)
  4. eBay ($6.98)
  5. Nordstrom ($28)

If quality is really important to you, why not splurge on a real gold chain? My mother has a few simple 24 carat gold ones that I wear from time to time, and I love them. These were really popular back in the day, so definitely raid the family jewelry box before you buy one of your own. Be careful before you buy, some of the gold-plated lustre of costume jewelry rusts and rubs off.

Screen Shot 2013-06-02 at 8.04.02 PM  Gold is definitely an acquired taste. I used to hate it because that’s all my family would wear, but then it grew on me. There’s nothing subtle about this trend and sometimes it can be horrendously gaudy, but as long as you remember to limit yourself to one major gold facet, you’ll be okay. Opt for a huge ass gold chain, or then pair a bunch of thinner ones. How much is too much? Well, that really depends on your taste and self-discretion. No one wants to look like Mr. T, but some major hardware at the neck on an otherwise more subdued outfit can really make a statement. I personally go for one big one because it’s easier and less clutter, but thinner ones one a more casual outfit might do the trick!

What do you think? Gaudy and ghetto? Or gorgeous and glam? Let us know!

Mieux & Mieux Beauty Moment: Braid Brigade

Braids have been a staple in summer beauty for as long as I can remember, but it seems that over the past few years, the stylized braid has reached new heights of trendiness. From fishtails, to twisted headbands and everything in between, there’s an intricate braided hairstyle to fit your every mood. What better a focus for a Beauty Moment, no? If you’re looking for a super simple, summer-appropriate way to change up your daily look, braid it up! Here are three of my favorite braided ‘dos of the moment!

The Balmain Braid

Virtually every little girl has rocked a classic rope braid or two at least once in her life. And with good reason! This “basic” rope braid results in a look that’s both fashionable and functional. It’s a go-to for beach babes, a quick fix for bad hair days, and a sporty girl staple for keeping hair out of the eyes. As you have probably guessed from the photo above, the rope braid is runway friendly, too! Beauty director Sam McKnight created the classic braided hairstyle above for Balmain’s Paris S/S 13 shows. Love!

Sneaky Braids

Blink and you’ll miss it! Bohemian and undercover, the addition of a covert braid or two is a look that’s loved by celebrities and real girls alike. Super-sneaky braids keep hair from looking too perfectly “done” while also adding a stylish dose of interest and intrigue to otherwise non-notable hair. If you’re a laidback,  hair-down kind of girl, you’ll love the sneaky braid–it gives you most of the mileage of trendy braids without pulling your hair back or sweeping your tresses away from your face. The result is a bit mysterious, a bit bohemian, and a bit mermaid–AKA totally stylish.

Cute and casual? I’m always in! Cheryl Cole rocked this “exceptionally loose” braid at Cannes, and managed to look both polished and a bit disheveled–embodying the ultimate, often coveted, “effortlessly stylish” vibe. Confession time: I don’t actually know how to legitimately braid my hair. I try! I can make some cute little twisty things that semi-resemble traditional braids! But when it comes down to actually doing it right, I’m basically hopeless. All of my “real” braids turn out looking exactly like this, though, so maybe there’s hope!

Inspired: Cleopatra

Elizabeth-Taylor-001 Fashion and movies go hand-in-hand, and even years later, classic films such as “Cleopatra” (1963) still inspire the world. As one of the most expensive films ever made at $44 million, $323 million today, the film actually took a loss at the box office. “Cleopatra” was a tedious production, full of setback with Taylor’s illness, and bad weather. Still, the lavish sets and period costumes were unlike anything of its time and made an impression on film. Goddess Elizabeth Taylor played leading lady Cleopatra, a pivotal role in her career. She holds a record for one of the most costume changes, 65 total, throughout the course of the film and looked sexy in every outfit. I lust over the 60s interpretation of the classic story with the dramatic Egyptian eye makeup, ornate headdresses, and sultry fabrics. Whether or not the tale was historically accurate, the film was opulent and theatrical and definitely transcends as one of the most iconic films to date. Getting inspired by this film doesn’t mean just being Cleopatra for Halloween. Channel your inner Taylor by opting for a heavy top liner and bronzer for high impact on a simple outfit. You could also layer lots of gold, playing with headpieces, chains, and deep gem tones. Let us know what inspires your style!

#tbt: Jackie Kennedy and the Pill-Box Hat

75083518759129461

There are few people I really consider fashion icons (in the league of Princess Diana or Victoria Beckham). One such gem is Jackie Kennedy-Onassis. Without going on a tangent of how she is my spirit animal (which I am convinced she is), Jackie-O was the ultimate first lady. There is just no denying that JFK was a sharp, young, good-looking lad himself, but his wife, Jackie, was an inspiration for everyone.

For our throwback purposes today, the facet we usually attribute to the leading lady is her famous “pill box hat“. Jackie didn’t invent the pill box hat, but she made it absolutely glamorous. Some of her most memorable pics are taken with the quaint little topper on her perfect bouffant. In fact, to this day, her infamous pink, pill box hat is part of many conspiracy theories. This is due to its misplacement on the day that JFK was assassinated in Dallas, TX. No one has ever been able to locate it.

154811305913562446

Yeah, it’s vintage and fabulous, but how am I suppose to wear it? Well firstly, you can find many versions of it. My personal favorites are the ones with the little net veil on it, or the faux fur Russian ones, which you can find at many thrift stores, vintage shops, even ASOS and Etsy has tons! It’s not just the pill box, but any vintage cocktail hat or fascinator will serve well to add a little old-Hollywood glamour to an evening outfit. Work it in with a blazer and jeans, or a classy dress. For this Throwback Thursday, channel your inner Jackie and incorporate vintage pieces (some you might even find here at Mieux and Mieux) with a modern twist!
