How did we discover new music before the days of Pandora and YouTube? Radio? Mix tapes? I legitimately can’t remember. I was first introduced to Lorde’s song “Royals” on Slacker’s New Indie First station, and found it to be love at first listen–unlike some of the other songs played on that station. Anyway! Lorde is the stage name of insanely talented sixteen-year-old Ella Yelich-O’Connor, who released her first EP The Love Club online in December. “Royals” has been a major hit in Lorde’s native New Zealand, where it debuted at #1 on the Top 40 charts in March, which is a pretty big deal considering that The Love Club wasn’t even released on CD until May! Also a big deal: here in the US, Royals premiered on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart at #30, which, according to Billboard, is “the highest for a solo female making her first visit to the airplay chart as a lead artist since M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” (No. 28) five years ago.” That’s huge, guys. Huge! Plus, The Cut just did this piece on her, so you know she’s legit. Check Lorde out here on Mieux & Mieux before she’s huge, because this girl is definitely going places!
…This just might be my official theme song for the summer.
What do you guys think of Royals? Do you think Lorde is going to sweep the states like she has NZ? What are your current jams?
