Prabal Gurung is one of the hottest celebrity designers to hit the scene, and rightly so. He has consistently dressed starlettes at every major award show and his ethereal gowns have topped the Best Dressed lists numerous times! Oprah, Michelle Obama, Emma Watson at the Met Gala, Jennifer Lawrence, Zoe Szeldana, and even Kate Middleton have all adorned themselves in a Prabal original. Talk about an A-list clientele!
Gurung first debuted in 2009 for New York Fashion Week. A year later, he launched his first runway show at the iconic Bryant Park. I became curious as to what his heritage was and found that he was born in Singapore, raised in Nepal and attended the prestigious National Institute of Fashion & Technology in New Delhi, India. With such a diverse background and culture to draw inspiration from, Gurung’s designs are vast. I have not been able to pin down his style or niche. This could be because he’s still so new, but I think it’s great to see such talent still discovering itself and evolving.
Gurung’s fashion haus recently gained more popularity due to his special collection launched for Target back in February with the theme “First Date”. It was easily one of the freshest collabs I’ve seen at Target and had so much runway presence (though I’m sad my neon ankle strap PrabalxTarget heels were faulty). Even the launch party for the collection was an over-the-top carnival theme! How fun? Another one of Prabal’s collabs is with nail tycoon Sally Hansen, for which he launched his 6th consecutive season of nail polish used on the runway then sold to the public.
Seriously, how adorable is he? Prabal is one of the few people I enjoy following/creeping up on Instagram because he doesn’t make me want to punch myself. In such a short amount of time, Gurung has cemented himself in the industry as a force of fashion and I personally look forward to seeing his talent grow and transform!
