Crop tops aren’t exactly new in the world of fashion. Warmer weather encourages options that are shorter, lighter, and more skin-bearing, so the crop top is a pretty perfect fit to the bevy of perennial trends. Relaxed-fit cropped shirts have been “in” since around the summer of 2010 or so, but this season, the chicest new way to wear a crop is to make it tight.
Nervous? Don’t be! Tight crops aren’t anywhere near as scary as they may sound to wear–even if you don’t have a VS model body. This is the perfect style to wear with high-waister skirts, shorts, or pants, showing only a sliver of skin. And of course, you can decide just how cropped you’d like your top to be, from mini (almost a bra) to maxi (almost regular shirt length) to midi (in between). For an even tamer look, go for a tight cropped tee paired with a loose, high-waisted bottom and layer up on top with a vest, combat jacket, or motorcycle coat.
In order to balance out their more fitted silhouette and minimal length, many of today’s tight cropped shirts tend to feature higher necklines–and reasonably so! This smart tailoring is an additional tool to in aiding and adding balance and minimizing overexposure. Look for t-shirt crops, reverse racerbacks, and mock turtleneck styles. On the other hand, however, you can take the tight crop look into bustier territory with spaghetti straps and sweetheart necklines. Both versions are on-trend and perfect for summer–the look you choose will depend merely on your comfort level and personal taste. As with any non-traditional skin-bearing apparel, though, make sure to watch out for weird tan lines!
Feeling it? Here are some of my favorite tight crops, and a little inspiration for how to style them.
Outfit 1: Beach Babe
Here’s an outfit that exemplifies that sliver-of-skin theory I talked about earlier! Just because a shirt is cropped doesn’t mean that you’re going to be showing an obscene amount of skin–especially when the other key component in your outfit is a maxi. To up the sex appeal and make this nighttime-appropriate, trade the aforementioned maxi for a high-waisted bandage skirt and steal the spotlight!
Outfit 2 : Festival Style
Another way to brave this trend without baring it all is to layer up! These layers, however, are totally sheer and lightweight, which makes them ideal for summer. You’re layering here for coverage, not warmth. The resulting look is one that is sexy and sensual without being over-the-top or inappropriate. PS, how Coachella is this outfit?
Outfit 3 : Celebrity-Inspired
For you high-spending trend hounds out there, a tight crop and track pants may be the hottest look of the season. The relaxed fit of the trousers counters the tightness of the crop, but since the midriff is bare, the overall look is still sexy and daring.
