Trend Alert: Tuxedo Pants

Menswear-inspired looks are so prevalent every year that the whole dress-like-a-guy-only-cuter thing can hardly be called a trend! The menswear approach is always in style and regularly makes a trendy comeback when key pieces are re-imagined or restyled. The latest piece in the menswear puzzle? Trendy tuxedo pants!

Women’s tuxedo pants come in two styles for 2013: The Trouser and The Jeans. Trousers that are cropped or feature an elastic-banded ankle provide maximum versatility and give their wearer the ability to take the trend from day to night with ease. Relaxed tuxedo trousers style wonderfully as a “fashion sweat pant” as they’re incredibly comfortable but appear completely put-together and chic when teamed with a simple tee, cute flats, and a statement necklace.

Denim iterations of the tuxedo pant are about getting a little wilder! No worries, though–whether you consider yourself a next-level fashionista or if you find a classic vibe in dress more appealing, there is a tuxedo jean to please your palate. There are nontraditional colored washes with contrasting stripes that offer a built-in chance to color block, neutral pairs that are simple to style, but provide a pop of on-trend sensibility and offer more complexity than a standard jean, and single-color sets that nod to the tuxedo trend by highlighting the striped stitching without making too much of a statement.

Whichever interpretation you choose, the vertical stripe that personifies this trend elongates the leg and wearability is maximum. Trouser tuxedo pants are office-appropriate and skintight denim styles are great for casual weekend jaunts or hot nights on the town. Naturally, either rendering looks awesome “dressed up” since the tuxedo pant has its roots in men’s formal attire. Personally, I love the idea of a tuxedo pant and an especially sexy pair of stilettos teamed with a multi-strap tank instead of a dress for a spring night out. If you’re at all wary of investing in this trend, you can totally DIY-it! This fabulous (and simple!) tutorial from Because I’m Addicted will take you through all of the steps to creating a tuxedo pant on the cheap.

  1. I really love the tuxedo pants look – and the girl in the first picture totally rocked it! But sadly, I don’t think I can pull it off because of my wide hips … and short legs ): I did however recently purchased a pair of palazzo pants with panels on the side!
