FaceDress

Rooney Mara does awards season. Simply stunning.

There’s something about actress Rooney Mara that’s simply mesmerizing. Captivating. Intriguing. Rooney’s features are exceptionally striking, and her body is so ideal for couture that it almost makes you mad. With perfect pale skin and eyes the color of sea glass, she is one of the lucky ladies who can pull off almost every hair color or makeup trend imaginable. Don’t believe it? Just consider her transformation between Mark Zuckerberg’s ex-girlfriend in The Social Network and her title role in Girl With A Dragon Tattoo. Yeah. Mara can look prim and proper or totally scary badass, seemingly without batting an eyelash. If that doesn’t inspire some serious envy, I don’t know what will.

We’re not the only ones taken with Mara’s special breed of raven-haired beauty: she has appeared on Allure, Interview, GQ, and W and is a two-time Vogue cover girl. The clotheshorse is, of course, first and foremost a talented actress, appearing in films such as Youth in Revolt, The Social Network, Dare, Side Effects, and probably most notably, Dragon Tattoo. Rooney’s role in Girl With A Dragon tattoo was truly a transformative one–much of the star’s current style sensibilities seems to have been heavily influenced by the film. In her 2011 interview with Vogue, Mara stated, “Before, I dressed much girlier. A lot of blush-colored things. Now I literally roll out of bed and put on whatever is there. I have really enjoyed being a boy this last year.”  Gotta love a chameleon! Want to make a similar change in aesthetic? Read on for our tips on embracing a Rooney Mara-inspired look.

Tips for Dressing like Rooney

Best Dressed

Best Dressed by far: Rooney looks awesome on and off the red carpet.

Stay Neutral. As a general rule, Rooney tends to favor apparel in shades of black, white, grey, and nude. Not only are these neutral, often monochromatic looks incredibly chic, they’re also figure-flattering. Fun fact: monochromatic outfits of any hue are actually just as slimming as wearing black! Kick it like Rooney and grab pieces in neutral pallets for a mysterious and elegant look.

Mix ladylike pieces with edgy elements. A must for many well-styled women, this oft-overlooked tip can enhance an outfit better than any “it” bag or statement shoe ever could. The most interesting looks generally tend to have an element of dichotomy, whether it’s throwing a leather jacket over a girly sundress or

Choose tailored, body-conscious pieces. Rooney has the uncanny ability to wear cut-outs, crop-tops, and plunging necklines all without appearing the least bit raunchy. Jealous? By shifting your focus to garments’ fit and tailoring instead of fixating on wearing all of the newest trends, you too will appear perpetually put together. Whatever it may be, embrace your shape and highlight your most favorite features. By focusing on fit, as Mara does, you’ll always appears tasteful and alluring.

Embrace a statement lip. No matter how pervasive the trend, you probably haven’t ever seen Rooney Mara with a glossed pink lip. If she’s not going bare, the actress is almost always wearing a shade of red, especially on the red carpet. From dark berry to candy apple, Mara’s emphasis on her lovely lips is one of her most iconic beauty habits.
