Top Knots Save Lives

My bun and I have a special relationship. Sometimes, it saves my life from bad hair days, sometimes it saves me time. Sometimes it acts as the ultimate, edgy up-do, and it even predicts the weather like a doppler antenna. No…seriously.

All these things aside, the top knot has really evolved within its relatively short lifespan. The effortless ball is definitely the most chic way to go. The versatile look can be paired with an extravagant Naeem Khan gown, or your boyfriends v-neck and you can always change it up. If you are interesting in sporting one, here are some tips:

1.) The donut is actually really helpful. Some pull their hair through then wrap it around the donut OR pull their hair through it then put a hair tie around it and tuck in loose hair. While people think the donut is only for a super structured, clean knot, you can pull the crap out of it and make it messy. Screen Shot 2013-03-28 at 1.10.59 AM

2.) To do a top knot minus the donut, you basically need a really good understanding of your hair and how it falls. I know my hair, since it’s super straight Asian hair, it starts to topple and fan out, which is okay if you can pin it in the right places and hair spray it beforehand. Others might have a frizzy, thicker bun. It really depends on the quality of your hair. There are many ways to achieve the look. One way is to start with a ponytail, and use your finger to wrap your hair around it and pin. Another way is to ponytail it then tie it at the base like a big floppy loop, wrap the other hairs around it then pull the fan out and pin to base.

3.) There is no need to have a perfect knot. Honestly, its more chic to have that whole I-don’t-really-care-because-I-am-so-freaking-badass-and-overall-better-than-you-in-life bun going on with strays falling everywhere. Abandon the ancient notions that told you it had to be neat and centered. Ain’t nobody got time fo dat.

I am notorious for rocking a ridiculously obnoxious knot atop my head 99% of the time because its just too easy. If you already rock the knot, then I see you girl. However, if you haven’t quite figured it out, definitely give the fun and easy look a try! And remember, the key is to look effortless.
